Artist and illustration Andrea Wan painted the wall of 5 floor building as a part of UPEA17 art festival. She is born in Hong Kong, grown up in Vancouver and lives in Berlin nowadays. From her works you’ll find bright colours and mood from fairytale.

The piece is bold and dreamy eye-cather which allows to wiewer to make an interpretition of their own. The artist has found inspiration to this imaginary representation of body from nature among other sources.

There is more urban street art in Valtakatu. One wall of this building has been painted on different shades of red and blue. You can see eyes and claws of some creature in this fantasy style mural. Inside of the building there is workspaces for artists. At street-level Arctic Design Shop has a great variety of Lappish crafts. At summertime local theatre arranges plays in the back yard.

Old town hall

Valtakatu 18

Ferdinand Salokangas worked in Rovaniemi during the years 1945–56 as the main protagonist of the reconstruction period in Rovaniemi. Salokangas has had great impact in the cityscape of Rovaniemi. Old Town Hall is considered as one of his main works, which shows well his personal way to design and decorate. A significant detail is his star shape that is found in the balconies. Nowadays there is a design boutique hotel Arctic Light Hotel in the building.

These bronze reindeers greet passers-by on the crossroads of Aallonkatu and Valtakatu. The sculptor Samuli Alonen presented Northern animal in the urban shape. Despite the streamlined implementation, the warm connection between the mother and its calf can be noticed clearly.

Bella the reindeer

Valtakatu 18

Colourful reindeer Bella attracts visitors and locals of Rovaniemi. Bella stands in front on Arctic Light Hotel. Sculpture was erected by Mikko Virkkula, and painted by textile artist Susanna Sivonen. Reindeer was ordered by Arctic Light Hotel.

EDGE gallery

Valtakatu 24

Edge Gallery showcases the works of innovative emerging artists at the Kauppayhtiö restaurant. The Eclectic Pop & Street Art collection of local Belgian born entrepreneur, Lieven De Rycke, is displayed. 

With this exhibition Lieven wants to show that Art can be abundant, beautiful and fun. 

KAISA sirén

DREAM - DUSK - DARING, photographs of mindscapes, is Kaisa Sirén's exhibition in the lobby of Arctic City Hotel. Kaisa Sirén is a Rovaniemi based photographer expressing her inner feelings and finds her mindscapes through nature photography. In her works she also wonders about the state of nature and climate change.

NANUK the polar Bear

Valtakatu 18

Nanuk the Polar bear was created by the sculptor Mikko Virkkula. Sculpture arrived to the Arctic Hotel's front yard in 2015. Nanuk is the symbol of the Arctic Light Hotel. Nanuk has to do with WWF and reminds us about the climate change, being aware of the isssue and responsible in lifestyle choices.

 

RISto immonen

Valtakatu 18

Sculptures by Risto Immonen, a Lappish sculptor and artisan, are exhibited on the sidewalk in front of Arctic Light Hotel. Risto Immonen uses materials such as steel, stainless steel, copper and different wood materials in his sculptures which deal with phenomena of a humane world. 

"In the artwork it is not so important what has been attempted to convey - but what has been said in it."
